The National Institute of Statistics publishes the death data for 2021

There have been more than 4,000 deaths by suicide in 2021.

The National Institute of Statistics has just published mortality data in Spain for the year 2021. Data for the first half of the year 2022 was also published.

During 2021 suicide has remained the leading external cause of death with 4,003 deaths. This represents an increase of 1.6% compared to the previous year.

By sex, 2,982 men and 1,021 women died by suicide.

In the first half of 2022, data continued a similar trend, with 2,015 deaths in the first six months of the year. This represents an increase of 5.1% compared to the same period in 2021.

This growing should be a warning for us. Suicide is a preventable cause of death but it costs more lives each year. Now more than ever, the need to implement a suicide national plan to stop this trend and save lives is evident.
